This 5-Minute Homemade Guacamole recipe is an absolute staple in my house! It's really simple, and quick enough to make while you're waiting on your quesadillas or tacos to finish cooking. If you're like me, you can also just make a big batch to snack on throughout the week!
I love snacks and meals that don't take much time to prepare, and this creamy guacamole is so great to whip up in the kitchen for a quick snack or appetizer. If you don't feel like chopping veggies, you can grab diced versions of everything in your produce aisle. Serve alongside tortilla chips and a batch of homemade medium salsa for a nice little sampler!
The Coined Breakdown
- Total Cost per serving: $1.15
- Total Cost (6 servings): $6.87
- Those Other Guys: $6.99 per serving
Ingredients
- Avocados - obviously the bulk of our guacamole recipe. Pick large avocados that have dark green skins, so they are ripe enough to mash.
- Roma Tomatoes - I love the color and slight sweetness that fresh tomato brings to guacamole! I suggest grabbing the Roma variety because they are usually less watery.
- Yellow Onion - Provides a great crunch to the dish.
- Jalapeño Pepper - We remove the seeds and rib, so the guacamole isn't spicy. If you like spicy guac, leave a few seeds in!
- Fresh Garlic - Some minced garlic gives a good depth of flavor to our dip.
- Lime - Lime juice provides a citrusy kick that balances out all the creaminess of avocados. Use a fresh lime over bottled lime juice.
- Cilantro - A staple in most Mexican dishes. You only need about a handful, minced well.
- Salt & Pepper - The instructions give a starting point for the amount of salt/pepper, but ultimately you want to taste and adjust the seasonings to your liking.
Variations and Substitutions
No-Tomato Guacamole: Leave out the tomatoes for an even more traditional guacamole recipe.
Black Bean & Roasted Corn Guacamole: Instead of tomatoes, stir in some roasted corn and black beans! It's like a burrito bowl.
Pomegranate Guacamole: I've had this at a local restaurant and it was really good! Stir in some pomegranate seeds for a cool crunch.
How to Make Quick & Easy Homemade Guacamole
Step 1: Take your ripe avocados and add the flesh to a mixing bowl.
Step 2: Mash using a fork. This is up to how you like your guacamole; for chunkier guac, mash less. For a smoother texture, mash more.
Step 3: Add the remainder of your ingredients to the mashed avocado. Stir well, then taste and adjust any seasonings to your preference.
Step 4: That's it! If you want to make this a couple hours ahead, add plastic wrap to avoid any oxidation. See my recipe tips below for more details!
Recipe Pro Tips
- Grab your avocados ahead of time. There's been many a time that I went to the store to make guacamole, just to find out all of the avocados were bright green and hard. Buy yours ahead of time, then keep out on the counter until they are ripe and ready to mash. Then, you can store in the fridge until you're ready to use.
- Remove the rib and seeds of the jalapeño. To avoid a super spicy guacamole, remove the center and seeds.
- Store smartly. To store ahead of time and delay the browning process, start by adding the dip to a storage container and flatten the top into a smooth layer using a spoon. Then, cover with plastic wrap, pressing down to remove any extra air. Finally, top the container with a lid.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, I actually have a hack for that! Chop your produce and store in small food containers. Add the ripe avocados, unpeeled, to a large bowl. Place the containers and bowl of avocados onto a wooden cutting board with a citrus squeezer, knife, and fork. Then, wrap the entire thing with cling wrap.
When you arrive at the party, unwrap the cutting board and assemble in the bowl that you held the avocados in. It'll take 5 minutes or less to have fresh guacamole for the crowd, and it's also a cool party trick!
I recommend covering with plastic wrap to prevent any air from coming in contact with the avocados - see #3 of my recipe pro tips.
I've also created a smooth layer of guac using a spoon, then poured cool water on top. Once you're ready to eat, drain the water and stir the guacamole.
Keep for up to four days - if it lasts that long!
