Roasted sweet potatoes are so simple to cook; and my recipe for Baked Sweet Potatoes with Chai-Spiced Butter is a fun spin on a versatile side dish! Garnish your potatoes with either sweet or savory toppings... the choice is yours.

Three baked sweet potatoes with chai spiced butter on top.

Sweet potatoes are filled with fiber, antioxidants, and vitamin A - so you can feel great about fueling your body. Baking them whole is a hands-off process, making it easy to focus on preparing the rest of your meal (or having a glass of wine!)

    Ingredients

A wooden board with ingredients for baked sweet potatoes and chai butter.
    • Sweet Potatoes - Grab good-looking sweet potatoes from the grocery store, and scrub the outsides well with a vegetable brush.
    • Butter - I use salted butter to balance out all the sweetness.
    • Brown Sugar - Can be substituted for other sweeteners like coconut sugar or maple sugar.
    • Chai Spice - For a twist on the classic cinnamon butter! I use a chai spice blend that is bold and tasty.

    Variations and Substitutions

Oven vs. Air Fryer: You could also roast these in an air fryer!

Breakfast Baked Sweet Potatoes: Use the chai butter and top with bacon, extra cinnamon, and honey.

Southwest Stuffed Sweet Potatoes: Skip the sweetened butter - add ground beef, chopped peppers and onions, taco seasoning, Monterey Jack cheese, and sour cream.

BBQ Chicken Sweet Potatoes: Fill each potato with seasoned chopped chicken, barbecue sauce, red onion slices, and fresh parsley.

The Best Way to Bake Sweet Potatoes

Let's get into a few tricks to make perfect baked sweet potatoes every time. First of all, make sure you thoroughly wash the outsides and scrub with a towel or vegetable brush. Potatoes come from the ground, so you don't want to consume that dirt!

Poke your sweet potatoes with a fork all around. This allows steam to escape while in the oven.

Add the sweet potatoes to a foil-lined pan, but don't wrap them all the way up in foil. Bake for 45-55 minutes until soft and caramelized, and that's it! You'll be able to stick a fork in the middle very easily.

While the sweet potatoes are roasting, you can make any toppings and the chai compound butter. This is one of my favorite side dishes just because of how hands-off it is.

    Recipe Pro Tip

    1. Don't wrap the potatoes in foil. This steams the skin and makes it almost slimy. We want a nice crispy potato skin!

    Instructions

    • To begin, wash the outside of your potatoes well and pierce them all over with a fork.
      4 count sweet potatoes
    • Add the potatoes to a foil-lined baking sheet.
      Don't wrap the potatoes!
    • Bake at 400°F for 45 minutes. A fork inserted in the center should come out smoothly.
    • Meanwhile, set your butter on the counter until it's softened.
      3 tablespoons salted butter
    • Whisk in the brown sugar and chai spice blend.
Using a whisk helps get the compound butter nice and fluffy. Add the compound butter to the refrigerator to chill if you prefer.
1 ½ tablespoons brown sugar, ½ tablespoon chai spice blend
    • Once the potatoes are done, remove from the oven and slice down the middle.
    • Add the chai butter on top, then sprinkle some flaky salt for garnish. Enjoy!
