Crispy Smashed Potatoes have to be the next side dish on your dinner plate! They have a fluffy interior with a crisp crust, plus tons of garlic-herb butter for that next-level flavor combination. But be forewarned: smashed potatoes are highly addictive and you'll clear your plate before you realize it!

A sheet pan covered in parchment paper with a serving of smashed potatoes and a pastry brush on it.

When you're looking for different, but tasty way to serve potatoes with dinner - these Crispy Smashed Potatoes are a perfect twist on the classic vegetable.

Most of the cooking time is spent hands-off in the oven, and they go well with any type of protein you can think of! Try serving alongside my Honey Soy Glazed Salmon or Crispy Baked Hot Honey Chicken.

    Ingredients

A wooden board containing a bag of petite gold potatoes and sauce cups of melted butter, olive oil, and seasonings.
    • Petite Gold Potatoes - These type of potatoes are great because they have a thin, mild-flavored skin which lends well to a crispy exterior after roasting!
    • Melted Butter + Olive Oil - The instructions call for brushing a bit of melted butter and olive oil both before and after baking. This gives tons of flavor.
    • Spice Mix - We keep it simple with a blend of salt, black pepper, ground oregano, and garlic powder. This way, your potatoes will pair well with all types of proteins and vegetables.

    Variations and Substitutions

Have some potatoes to use up for dinner? Try one of these variations!

Air Fried Potato Wedges: Use a bag of Yukon gold potatoes to make crispy potato wedges in the air fryer or in the oven.

Southern-Style Potato Salad: A cookout classic! This potato salad uses Yukon gold potatoes, mayo, and the perfect blend of spices. Make sure to keep it in the fridge before serving so the flavors marinate.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries: Slice some sweet potatoes into matchstick shapes for a fun twist on French fries!

Broccoli-Cheddar Loaded Baked Potatoes: Have some extra russet potatoes? Try my recipe for Broccoli-Cheddar Baked Potatoes. We make a quick homemade cheese sauce that's divine.

How to Make Crispy Garlic Smashed Potatoes

A large pot filled with water and petite gold potatoes.

Step 1: To begin, wash and scrub the outside of your potatoes.

Add them to a large pot filled with salted water, and boil for 15 minutes or until fork-tender.

A hand using the bottom of a mug to smash boiled potatoes on a sheet pan before roasting.

Step 2: Let the potatoes cool for 5 minutes. Slice them into halves or thirds.

Using the bottom of a mug or cup, smash each potato on a parchment-lined paper. You want them flat, but not broken apart.

A hand brushing a seasoning and butter blend onto boiled, smashed potatoes.

Step 3: Stir together the butter, olive oil, and seasonings in a small sauce bowl.

Using a pastry brush, brush most of the sauce mixture onto the potatoes (reserve a bit for after baking.)

A pan covered with parchment paper and crispy smashed potatoes.

Step 4: Roast the smashed potatoes at 390°F for 30-40 minutes. Then brush any extra sauce on top of the potatoes.

They should be crispy on the outside and golden brown. Enjoy!

    Recipe Pro Tips

    1. Let the potatoes cool for a few. I've found that letting the potatoes cool for about 5 minutes after boiling, helps keep most of them from breaking apart when you smash them!
    2. Use a bit of non-stick spray. Spraying some cooking spray onto the bottom of your mug helps avoid the potatoes from sticking.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use other types of potato for this recipe?

I've only tested this recipe with petite gold potatoes. Yukon gold potatoes (the larger version) should do the same thing, but you will most likely need to cut them into fourths after boiling.

The skin on russet potatoes may be a little too tough to get crispy.

How do I store extra smashed potatoes?

You can store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

To reheat, I recommend using the air fryer so the potatoes can crisp back up.
